Target pulls some LGBTQ merch amid threats to employees

Target is removing some of its Pride-month merchandise in the wake of repeated threats to employees.

“Since introducing this year’s collection, we’ve experienced threats impacting our team members’ sense of safety and wellbeing while at work,” the retail giant said in a Tuesday statement.

“Given these volatile circumstances, we are making adjustments to our plans, including removing items that have been at the center of the most significant confrontational behavior.”

Target’s decision comes amid the ongoing national debate on transgender rights and gender-affirming care. The merch is coming off the shelves as right-wingers have been on the attack against trans rights and multiple state legislatures have passed laws concerning bathroom usage. Additional laws and regulations have also targeted medical care for the transgender community.

Target did not give details about the threats involved or which items are being removed.

Items from the Pride collection include “tuck-friendly” swimsuits that provide trans people a way of concealing their private parts.

Online claims incorrectly stated that the swimsuits were for children, though the Associated Press reported they were only available for adults.

Target said that it has been providing products for Pride Month for over 10 years.

Pride Month, which takes place in June, celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer individuals and issues.

“Our focus now is on moving forward with our continuing commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community and standing with them as we celebrate Pride Month and throughout the year,” Target stated.
